Our annual Monte Sano Cookout & Campout usually takes place the first or second weekend in September. This is our first big event of the year and is a great time to come see what Cub Scouting is all about!
Before the pandemic, our weekend began with the Raingutter Regatta; however, due to COVID-19, we temporarily suspended this activity for everyone’s safety and instead we enjoyed activities planned which facilitated social distancing. We look forward to when we can reinstate the Raingutter Regatta tradition.
After the Regatta, we have our Cookout on the top of Monte Sano, with a great view overlooking Huntsville below. The scouts of Troop 8 treat us right with great BBQ, and everyone chips in with a side or dessert to share. For 2020, we will make modifications and adjustments to the food service to ensure the safety of everyone.
When we’ve had our fill, it’s time to work off some of those calories with a short hike. One of our intrepid Den Leaders usually has the route lined up and all are invited to enjoy the walk.
Once everything from lunch is cleaned up, those who are staying for the campout move their vehicles to the campsite. We usually enjoy a campfire, giving scouts an opportunity to show off their skits and jokes, roast marshmallows, and just enjoy time together.
The next morning begins with a flag ceremony and a time of reverence, followed by breakfast. If there’s enough interest, we’ll enjoy another short hike before breaking camp and heading back to civilization.
